Uluberia to Malda The West Bengal Motoride Exploration

Routining and Prep & Planning

Air distance: ~1335 km (train)

Timing: It will be good to depart with the dawn (Uluberia opens pedestrian lanes, and dawn meters are the best).

Bike Prep: Tyres, brakes, chain and lights. Take a spare tool kit, puncture repair kit and spare tubes.

Start:

 Uluberia -> Srirampur-> Palashipara (~160km)

Morning: Bye bye Uluberia through NH16 → rural beautiful drive. Soft sunshine, fresh air.

In the middle: Srirampur has tea shops and local snacks and is the best breaker and breakfast point.

Afternoon: Traverse further in to the North Bengal roads, along with the paddy fields. Go to Palashipara to have a lunch in a dhaba.

Palashipara 170km Malda

Early start: Start very early in the morning so that it would avoid the heat in the afternoon.

Villages are lined with roads, and here and there some potholes-causing-caution.

Stopover: Ratua: stop and have roadside jol bhora luchi and rosogolla.

The landing: land at Malda in the afternoon. Party and savor natural Malda mango-pittha and a walk through the Malda town bazaar.

Best of and Must-See

River sceneries: Observe the Mahananda river bank at Samsi, calm and camera friendly.

Local sweets: Do not forget about jhunguri (peanuts), fresh-cut mangoes (in season) and delicious fritters.

Architecture: (by glimpsing) ruins a little outside Gour; and old mosque of Adina; ideal for explorations in haste.

Rest: Reserve a homestay or lodge in Palashipara so that it is easier to move next day.

Road Conditions & Road Safety

Smooth highway as well as rural sections with variable surfaces may be expected.

Watch out, use protective clothes, keep visibility up.

Fuel scarcity between villages- Re-fuel at Palashipara, Ratua or English Bazar region.

How to have an Unforgettable Ride

Get up early to have peaceful mornings and avoid the rush hours in the middle of the day.

Plan fuel: top up on bigger towns to eliminate shortages in the rural areas.

Be open: go with the flow when it comes to unexpected stops in the village, as they tend to be memorable ones.

Be in touch: cell phone receivers can fail; carry some maps and phone numbers even without a network.

Weather check: monsoon is coming; it can rain, take a waterproof jacket.

Ride Uluberia - Malda Why?

It might be a long way, but not just a journey; it is a dip in the heartland of Bengal: green fields, simple roadside food, and cultural treasures that are not on any tourist map. Get out of the metropolitan hum-drum of Howrah and Kolkata to find more basic and heart-felt roads.
